TDC PREMIERE! Daily Dose of Awesome 12/5 - Jawbreaker, Slowdive, and the Angry Samoans
[tws]
Alright, so this is something I started doing for a good friend who was intrigued by my broad base of bands
with generally off-kilter names and unique interpretations of pop music. These are publications of the daily emails, editing
for mass enjoyment and mass joking about the bands I obviously love but will make fun of. I'm starting the "Daily Dose of
Awesome" on the site here in addition to any writings I may actually occasionally publish as a way to keep the website content
fresh. As a lot of people may have heard on the radio show or in my standup, my sense of humor is heavily informed by music
and ridiculous aspects of pop culture (obviously, I'm the only comic who could ever say that. Kinda like that whole "black
people vs. white people" thing). Regardless, here in a special premiere edition, it's three for the rest of the week to last
you while I'm away. The emails will still go to my friend and whoever else she may bring into the fold a few days before publication
here. If you're interested in being ahead of the curve, just email me at tyler at tdcpresents dot com and I'll hook you up.
For now, here you go.
JAWBREAKER
You can probably figure this out from the way they're dressed in this picture, or the fact that Black Schwartzenbach
had anything to do with the band, that they were the 90's flagship of shit yourself whining-core music. But, they were the
greatest shit yourself whining-core band ever. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is completely timeless and probably the best
thing to come out of San Francisco in the last fifteen years. This is a slight cross-section of their finest work. Call it
'being young, broke, and heartbroken in the Bay Area in the mid-90's' core. Respect.
SLOWDIVE
Swirling, twirling guitars and "dreamy" vocals that the Scots
and I suppose Irish were into in the post-Stone Roses era. Slowdive are lucky culturally, though unlucky financially that
My Bloody Valentine are the archetypal critic's go-to RIYL band for groups who try to crank out this type of stuff today.
Don't get me wrong- Loveless is great but no song that MBV ever pumped out was as good of a single as "Alison" or "When
the Sun Hits."
ANGRY SAMOANS
For some reason, Seeqpod didn't cross reference "Lights Out!" the Angry Samoans' trademark slab of SoCal Punk from
1982. Listen to it here, and use headphones if you're at work. Especially if you work at a day care. We don't want kids trying
to poke their eyes out with forks. Listen to it HERE. Do it.
BONUS Awesome for the Day
This won't be for every edition of this, but here is a wonderful music video to Ra Ra Riot's wonderful song "Dying is Fine."
It was co-directed by old Syracuse friends and outstanding artists Albert Birney, Nick Gurewich, and Jon Moses. I love how Wes is dressed like Panama Jack for no reason other than to explore his backyard.
